the etymology of where the phrase 'pet peeve' originates was not interesting enough to include, however this evening i, on a couple of occasions, recognized some of my dearest quirks slash pet peeves:
#1 - drivers who switch lanes w/o using their blinker: this peeve originated in middle school when my father would drive me to school each day and we would zip from lane to lane on 395 like a pencil slyly scrolling cursive letters on paper. he directed the car in these movements without warning and that made me quite anxious so i one day voiced my concern.
#2 - crooked things: last year while sitting in Alderman library, i happened to look across the cafe and spotted that a painting in front of a student was tilted to one side. so, i naturally got out of my chair, walked across the room, said excuse me as i awkwardly placed my body in front of this guy's books and straightened the painting, returning to my seat as if nothing happened.
#3 - asking 'how are you?' in passing: i do not like when asked 'how are you?' while passing someone quickly on the way to class; do you really care how i am? what if i happened to respond that i was really in an awful mood and needed to talk, do you really have the time to stop? b/c of this, i've limited my 'how are you-ing' to when i actually have the time.
#4 - slow walkers: for a gal w/ short legs, i like to get places quickly. there are a whole lot of really slow walkers at uva. perhaps i should take a lesson from them and enjoy my walks more...but i also find getting to class very much like a game where i have to run and dodge.
#5 - voicemails: i've gotten better at this in the past 3 years however, i infamously dislike voicemails. if you call and i don't pick up, a missed call will suffice. i'll call back, or if it's urgent, texts work quite well. at one point first year i had 24 voicemails and my roommate forced me to listen to them.
that's just 5. i hope i don't have too many more...but i really do not desire to sit here and think about it too hard.
