To Do Lists

I am a list writer.

I write lists on post-its. I write lists in ink on my hand. I write them in the margins of my notes.
I write them in my sleep. I write them during church. I write lists in my planner and then later rewrite them in my little black moleskin.

Each mornings, as a ritual of waking up and readying myself for the day, I check the weather and write my list for the day, including classes, lunch appointments and everything in between.

Lists are my way of keeping sane and reminding myself that little accomplishments are still accomplishments. I get the sheer pleasure of crossing things off my list. And this is precisely why I often write down things that I've already completed, simply to enjoy the feel of my pencil moving from left to right across the words.

On occasion, I have had a hard time parting with certain lists because I know I can look back at them and remember a day, a moment, an achievement. However, in the end, it's just a piece of paper with a list.

Milk, eggs, rice, toast, yogurt, pears, peanut butter...
wake up, class, lunch, class, class, coffee w/ X, cvs to print a photo, walk home...
gifts for: mom, dad, sis, besties from home?, cards for profs?

Well, I'm going to go cross it off for the day: -write blog post! :o)
