Instead, the metro is my best friend. Living at the end of the Blue Line, I get on and am in the city in 35-45 mins depending on rush-hour etc. It's a lovely means of transportation, you get on, you get off and you're in a new place. No effort.
Besides the convenience of the metro however, I more so love the people I get to see on the metro. A couple summers ago when I was working and commuting into the city daily, I saw the usual working men and women moving to and from their places of work and their homes. But on weekends and over the summer you see so many more interesting characters. Two weeks ago, I happened to be riding back after there was a Taylor Swift concert downtown and I was surrounded by middle school girls and their mothers. I think the mothers were talking more about the concert than the young girls...
This evening, I watched a drunk boy sit with his face plastered against his hand, his mardi gras beads swinging along his neck - likely repercussions of a day partying for either the U.S.A. v. England game and/or the LGBT PRIDE parade. Also, riding along was a stylin' man decked out in a really good looking suit and shades listening to music outloud on his iphone/touch and speaking Spanish on the phone (which was a tad unexpected) AND my favorite, was a father with a double stroller parked in front of him and two little boys lounging around in their seats. The kid sitting in the back was a bit older, maybe 4ish and fell asleep part way into the ride. The one in the front was a little baby and he had the best smile. Whenever I smiled at him he lit up and would giggle and kick the air with such innocent and unashamed happiness. The boys' father was so attentive to his sons and I admired their dynamic. Before I knew it though, it was the end of the line and time to get off...
I'm sure I'll see new faces and interesting folks on my next ride with Metro!
